Pittsburgh Zoning Map 1958

The 1958 Zoning Map and Text was the first completely rewritten/remapped zoning ordinance for Pittsburgh since it first adopted zoning in 1923. It is the first ordinance to combine use, area, and height regulations into a single layer of zoning districts. This ordinance remains the foundation of the current (2025) zoning ordinance, even though it underwent a significant overhaul in 1999. Details Reviewed created this map based on the map included in the May 1958 Zoning Ordinance available from the Pittsburgh City Archives. The digitization was funded by the Heinz Endowments.

Data Notes

This digitization of the City of Pittsburgh's 1958 Zoning Map is Detail Reviewed's interpretation of the original paper map. The original map varied in scale, accuracy, and detail. In the digitization, where reasonable, zoning district boundaries were placed following the street grid or property lines as of 2024. In some areas, where highway development, urban renewal, and other changes decimated the street grid or property boundaries between 1958 and 2024, the digitized zoning district boundaries are an approximation based on the remaining context clues.
