| date | date | Date | The date of the surface temperature inversion report. The date will always be in the table regardless of whether there is a surface temperature inversion or not. |
| inversion_y_n | text | Inversion (Y/N) | Is a surface temperature inversion present? “Y” is for yes and “N” is for no. “NA” would be used if there is no sounding for some reason. Most of the time the reason will be that there is a shortage of helium gas that the National Weather Service uses to launch weather balloons. Whatever the case, it should be noted in the Notes section when “NA” is used. |
| temperature_c | text | Temperature (C) | The temperature difference between the top of the inversion and the bottom of the inversion reported in degrees Celsius. If a surface temperature is present, then this value is calculated. Otherwise, this column will have a blank/null value. If the temperature at the top of the inversion was 5°C and the temperature at the surface was 0°C then the strength of the inversion is 5°C (top) - 0°C (bottom) = 5°C. Starting in 2025, A surface temperature inversion is only reported if it is ≥ 1°C. |
| depth_m | int4 | Depth (m) | Depth of the surface temperature inversion given in meters. If a surface temperature inversion is present, then this value is calculated. Otherwise, this value will be a blank/null value. The weather balloon soundings from which the presence of a surface temperature inversion is diagnosed are launched at a starting elevation of 359 meters. If a surface temperature inversion were present and continued until 600 meters, then the depth of the inversion would be 600 meters – 359 meters = 241 meters. |

A surface temperature inversion is only reported if it is ≥ 1°C. If no inversion is present or no sounding exists, then the strength value is a blank/null. |
| notes | text | Notes | This section is used when there is something to note about the weather balloon launch from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. Most of the time, this will be used when there is a shortage of helium gas that the National Weather Service uses to launch weather balloons. On more rare occasions, something can be wrong with the sounding itself and that will be reported in this section also. If there is nothing to note, then it will be blank/null. |
